RECREATION & ACTIVITIES

ON THE ISLAND

The Blue Parrot is equipped with bicycles (4), beach chairs, and beach umbrellas exclusively for our guests' use!

No cars and acres of sandy paths provide miles of hiking, biking and walking trails on North Captiva. In addition to unlimited use of all Island Club facilities, guests of the Blue Parrot have enjoyed many of these activites, both on the island and off.

Boats And Fun: boat rentals (full and half day), waverunner tours (1 or 2 person), fishing poles (small fee, by week), and bait.

Hiking/Biking/Jogging: In addition to the trails of the State Nature Preserve, the miles of sandy lanes on North Captiva are ideal for hiking, biking and jogging.

Kayaking: Launch from the North Captiva Island Club Dock to explore the canal and bay. It is not uncommon to have dolphin as your traveling companions!

Fishing Poles and Bait: There is excellent surfcasting off the beach, or you can try your luck at the pier and canal by Barnacle Phil's, or the Bay, on the sandy beach at the end of the airstrip.

Fishing Charters: Our property manager, Barry, will be happy to help you arrange a fishing charter with one of our local knowledgable Captains.

Shelling: Dozens of varieties of rare and beautiful shells can be found on our miles of beach. Early morning is best, but a beach walk at virtually any time of day will yield treasures.

OFF ISLAND

Golf: Alden Pines Country Club, located on Pine Island, is a short boat ride away. Contact the Club and let them know when you are coming in (via Island Girl to Pineland Marina), and they will send a jitney to pick you up. The course is a challenging one, with water coming into play on many of its 18 holes.

Randall Research Center: South Florida archaeology and ethnography are the focus here, especially the Calusa Indians, who made Pine Island and its surroundings (including North Captiva) their home for 1500 years. The Center, which is easily walkable from Pineland Marina, gives tours of the historic Calusa grounds it is home to. (Check for tour hours/days.)

Museum of the Islands: Located near Pine Island Center, next to the Library, the Museum is dedicated to preserving both ancient and relatively recent histories of the pioneers of Pine Island. Exhibits range from Calusa murals to an extensive (more than 1700!) shell collection.

There are a number of restaurants on Pine Island. Our favorite is Reds, which has top-notch seafood and generally excellent fare.

For those who wish to explore by water, several wonderful day trips are possible, either via water taxi or rental boat:

Cayo Costa: Excellent shelling and largely uninhabited (there is an active coloney of wild pigs!)

Cabbage Key: Wonderful for lunch (they also serve breakfast, and dinner)

Captiva: We suggest Jensens Marina as a destination, accessible to the beach and a number of excellent dining spots.

Boca Grande: This delightful island is a great day trip for guests who want to charter a boat and take an "off island" trip.  Contact Property Manager Barry for details.
